acclimation process - explained
-
1) Introduce Ear Muffs
Place the ear muffs on the ground and let your dog sniff them. When your dog sniffs the ear muffs, give them a treat right away.
-
2) Touching Ear Muffs
Keep the ear muffs on the ground and reward your dog with a treat every time they touch their nose to the ear muffs. Then, hold the ear muffs in your hand and give a treat when your dog touches them. Repeat until your dog is comfortable and happy around the ear muffs.
-
3) Nose Between Ear Muffs
Hold the ear muffs apart and wait for your dog to put their nose between them. Treat your dog immediately when they do this. Repeat until your dog is comfortable putting their entire head between the ear muffs. Take your time and don't rush this step.
-
4) Ear Muffs Onto Head
Once your dog is okay with putting their head between the ear muffs, gently put the ear muffs on their head for just 5 seconds. Give them a treat right away, then remove the ear muffs.
-
5) Increase Duration
Repeat the previous step, gradually increasing the time your dog wears the ear muffs
(5 seconds -> 10 seconds -> 30 seconds).
Take it slow and don't rush this step. -
Remember:
Every dog is different. Some may take a few days to learn, while others might need more time. Always check that your dog is comfortable with each step before moving to the next. If your dog feels uneasy, go back to the previous step and repeat until they are comfortable.
Use yummy treats or play with their favorite toy as a reward during the training. Patience and kindness will help your furry friend get used to their ear muffs!
